Flemish minister-president backs Benelux merger proposal MAP
Matthias Diependaele, Minister president of Belgium’s Flanders region, has expressed openness to the concept of uniting Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg into a single country.
Diependaele suggested that such a union could be justified from a geopolitical standpoint, highlighting the importance of closer cooperation among the three nations. He also cited the growing influence of Russia and China as a key factor in considering such a move, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
“Projects of this kind are not realized overnight. Some politicians think they can design a perfect society on a blank sheet, but in reality, things do not work that way,” Diependaele said, emphasizing the complexity and long-term nature of such proposals.
The proposal has sparked debate in European political circles, raising questions about regional integration, sovereignty, and the strategic implications of closer alignment among these neighboring states.
