Flash floods, landslides kill four in northern Vietnam
Flash floods and landslides triggered by torrential rains have killed four people and injured seven others in Vietnam’s northern Lai Chau Province, while four people remain missing, the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.
The disaster destroyed 13 residential buildings and placed around 100 others at risk amid the threat of further landslides.
Heavy rainfall also damaged farmland, transport infrastructure and energy facilities. Preliminary economic losses have been estimated at more than 120 billion Vietnamese dong (about $4.75 million).
The provincial People’s Committee has declared a state of emergency in response to the disaster, including in Muong Than commune and at a landslide site that blocked part of National Highway 12 in Le Loi commune.
Prolonged heavy rain between July 15 and 17 triggered flash floods and landslides across the province, causing extensive damage to public and private property.
Search-and-rescue operations and relief efforts are continuing.
