FM: Iran has no intention of rejoining 2015 nuclear deal
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has announced that Iran signaled a firm departure from the 2015 nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), stating it has no intention of rejoining the agreement.
Araghchi, who heads the delegation, made these remarks during the second round of indirect talks with the US side in Rome, Caliber.Az reports, citing the minister's message on X.
“Relatively positive atmosphere in Rome has enabled progress on principles and objectives of a possible deal. We made clear how many in Iran believe that the JCPOA is no longer good enough for us. To them, what is left from that deal are "lessons learned". Personally, I tend to agree. The initiation of expert level track will begin in coming days with a view to hammer out details. After that, we will be in a better position to judge. For now, optimism may be warranted but only with a great deal of caution,” he wrote.
The JCPOA, signed in 2015 by Iran and six world powers, aimed to limit Tehran’s nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief. The US unilaterally withdrew from the deal in 2018 under the Trump administration, prompting Iran to roll back its commitments over time.
