Foreign policy chief declares EU's role in Ukraine Supportive but not a combatant
Josep Borrell, who is set to step down as the EU's foreign policy chief, has articulated a nuanced position regarding the European Union's role in the Ukrainian conflict.
Borrell acknowledged that while the EU is deeply involved in supporting Ukraine, it does not consider itself a direct participant in the conflict, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
In March 2024, Borrell clarified that the EU has no plans to deploy its citizens to fight in Donbas, contrasting with remarks made by French President Emmanuel Macron, who had suggested the possibility of sending European troops to Ukraine. Borrell criticized such proposals, advising against instilling fear among the public.
Despite this, Borrell emphasized the necessity for the EU to maintain its support for Ukraine and to focus on fortifying its own defence capabilities in preparation for future challenges.
