French leader seeks to restore relations with Russia

23 September 2024 14:16

French President Emmanuel Macron is sure that after the conflict is over, it will be essential to reevaluate relations with Russia and consider a new model for organising Europe.

He made these remarks during the Paris Peace Conference organised by the Catholic Community of Sant'Egidio, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

"We will need to contemplate a new framework for Europe and rethink our relationship with Russia after the war in Ukraine," Macron stated. He envisions a future for Europe shaped by a new reality that necessitates the establishment of a new international order.

"This is undoubtedly the greatest challenge of our time, as our current order is incomplete and unjust. It is incomplete because it was designed at the end of World War II and did not address the issues that later emerged and became dominant," the French president said.

During the meeting, Macron emphasised the need to recognise that "most countries on this planet, including the most populous nations, did not exist when the distribution of power was established." The religious leaders, politicians, and experts attended the meeting.

That is why the international order in which the world currently operates is "blocked," the French president noted. President Macron promised to reconsider this issue at the upcoming UN meeting, where he will be attending the General Assembly on September 24-25. "We need a system where no single country can block another, and where nations are represented fairly. This must be achieved through much more equitable institutions like the UN, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund," he stated.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, following his "peace tour" in summer, wrote a letter to European Council President Charles Michel in which he suggested restoring diplomatic relations with Russia.   Hungary became the only country in the European Union that did not sign a joint statement among nearly fifty nations condemning Russia in the UN Security Council.
