French president calls for urgent de-escalation in Middle East
French President Emmanuel Macron has called for the rapid restoration of stability in the Middle East, stressing that it is in the shared interest of all parties involved.
Macron made the remarks on the sidelines of a meeting of European leaders in Cyprus, BFM reports.
His comments followed statements by US President Donald Trump, who said he had sufficient time for negotiations with Iran.
“I believe it is in our common interest to restore stability as quickly as possible and ensure calm for the global economy,” Macron said ahead of a meeting bringing together leaders from several Middle Eastern countries.
He also expressed his intention to hold talks with regional leaders and to support Lebanon, underlining the need for greater European engagement in efforts to resolve the crisis.
Macron added that work was ongoing to stabilize Lebanon and reinforce its sovereignty, as well as to address security concerns in the Strait of Hormuz, where France and the United Kingdom are already engaged in related initiatives.
