Georgian speaker says opposition facing consequences of "radicalisation"
Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili has said that the opposition, which he says has chosen the path of radicalisation, is now facing the consequences of its actions.
He argued that opposition groups "turned away from democratic processes" after last year’s parliamentary elections and "embraced extremism under outside influence," Caliber.Az reports per Georgian media.
According to him, they are now “reaping the fruits” of that decision.
His remarks came as Georgia is holding municipal elections across the country. Voters are choosing 64 mayors of municipalities and 64 municipal councils.
Twelve political parties are participating in the polls, including three that cleared the parliamentary threshold in the 2024 general elections.
In total, 112 candidates are competing for mayoral posts, while 2,228 candidates are running for direct mandates in the municipalities.
