German defence giant eyes Volkswagen plant for bulletproof cabin production
The German defence conglomerate Rheinmetall is developing plans to manufacture bulletproof cabins for military trucks at a plant in Germany that Volkswagen intends to relinquish as part of its cost-cutting efforts.
The defense company is interested in establishing joint production with MAN for bulletproof cabins for military-type trucks, Caliber.Az reports, citing German media.
A potential site for this production is Volkswagen's plant in Osnabrück, which currently assembles the Volkswagen T-Roc Cabriolet crossover.
It was previously reported that Volkswagen plans to transfer the plant, along with part of its workforce, to a new owner in order to save costs. The company's CEO, Oliver Blume, has stated that he is "open" to considering the possibility of launching the production of military transport vehicles at the site.
Rheinmetall is a leading supplier in the defense industry, offering a wide array of products and systems, including military vehicles, weapons, ammunition, air defense systems, and electronic solutions.
