German FM urges EU to increase pressure on US over Ukraine peace talks
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock emphasized that the European Union must exert more pressure on the United States to ensure Washington remains a steadfast ally, especially in the context of ongoing negotiations for peace in Ukraine.
"We are increasing the pressure on the Americans to signal that they have a lot to lose if they stop standing by the liberal democracies of Europe," Baerbock stated during a campaign event near Berlin, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Three years ago when Russia first invaded Ukraine, the German government had proclaimed a "turning point," she said, referring to a much quoted speech by Chancellor Olaf Scholz promising more defence spending.
"Now we need a second turning point" Baerbock said, "no more dithering and wavering for our peace."
The German diplomat also expressed concern regarding potential negotiations between the US and Russia over peace in Ukraine, particularly the possibility of Ukraine being forced to make painful concessions.
Baerbock warned that "A sham peace - that is, a peace that is not peace, but blackmail or a surrender is not peace, but the opposite: further preparation for even more war and violence."
Despite these concerns, Baerbock reiterated her commitment to supporting Ukraine, stating, "I will support Ukraine as long as it needs it, because it is our peace."
"No one can decide on war and peace over the heads of the Ukrainians or us Europeans – and that is the clear German position," Germany's top diplomat said.
