German schoolboy finds 2,300-year-old coin in Berlin
A 13-year-old schoolboy in Berlin has discovered an ancient bronze coin, which experts say represents a unique find for the city, according to Bild.
The report says the coin dates back to the 3rd century BC and is the first Greek artefact of its kind ever found in Berlin.
Specialists estimate that the coin was minted in the north-west of modern-day Türkiye between 281 and 261 BC. One side depicts the goddess Athena wearing a Corinthian helmet, while the other shows her holding a spear and a spindle. The coin weighs 7 grams and has a diameter of 12 millimetres.
Experts have not yet determined how the artefact ended up in northern Central Europe. It is only known that the discovery site was once a burial ground from the Bronze or early Iron Age.
The schoolboy handed the coin over to specialists, where it is currently undergoing scientific evaluation and documentation. From April 15, it will be displayed to the public at the PETRI Berlin archaeological centre.
