Germany alarmed as Trump floats possible US withdrawal from NATO
Germany’s foreign minister, Johann Wadephul, has expressed concern over comments by US President Donald Trump suggesting Washington could reconsider its membership of NATO, warning that the alliance remains central to European security.
Speaking to German media, Wadephul said such statements were “worrying”, adding that the security environment had become more uncertain and that NATO must remain united.
He defended the alliance as “the most successful defence pact in the world” and insisted that continued transatlantic cooperation serves both European and US interests.
Wadephul said he is confident that a US withdrawal from NATO can still be avoided, arguing that a clear commitment from allies, including Germany, could help persuade Washington to maintain its role. He also noted that any exit would not depend solely on the US president, pointing out that congressional approval would be required.
Trump, who has repeatedly criticised NATO in recent weeks, has described the alliance as a “paper tiger” and suggested its future should be reassessed following the ongoing conflict involving Iran. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has echoed calls to review America’s position once the conflict stabilises.
At the same time, Trump has intensified rhetoric toward Iran, warning that US forces could expand strikes against the country’s infrastructure. He said bridges and power plants could be targeted next, following earlier damage to key facilities.
