Germany arrests Ukrainian citizen on suspicion of spying for Russia

Germany’s Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office has arrested a Ukrainian citizen suspected of espionage in favour of Russia following his extradition from Spain.

According to the authorities, the man identified as Sergey N. was detained in Spain at the end of March and handed over to German officials on May 15, Caliber.Az reports, citing German media.

An investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice has already executed the arrest warrant.

The investigation concerns two suspects — a 43-year-old Ukrainian man and a 45-year-old Romanian woman — who are alleged to have collected information on a German drone manufacturer supplying equipment to Ukraine.

Investigators say that since December 2025, Sergey N. systematically gathered data on the company and covertly photographed its facilities. He was later allegedly joined by Alla S., who is said to have identified the residence of a businessman and conducted surveillance of his home.

Prosecutors claim the intelligence gathering may have been part of preparations for possible further actions, including an attack. Both suspects are charged with espionage.

The identity of the businessman and the company has not been disclosed. It is known that the firm previously supplied Ukraine with strike drones and now mainly produces drone components.
