Germany upgrades Kinetic Defense Vehicle system used in Ukraine
Germany has unveiled an upgraded version of the Kinetic Defense Vehicle (KDV), a system designed to counter unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), at the Enforce Tac defence exhibition.
The modernization was carried out based on combat experience and operational feedback from Ukraine, where the system has been actively used, Caliber.Az reports via German media.
Germany delivered 12 KDV systems to Kyiv in December 2024. After analyzing field reports, engineers from Dehl Defence refined the system to enhance its effectiveness against small and medium-class drones, which pose a growing threat on the battlefield.
The upgraded KDV is mounted on a two-axle Enok MBB off-road vehicle and features an advanced R400S Slinger combat module from Electro Optic Systems. The module is equipped with a GAU-19 three-barrel machine gun, providing enhanced firepower against airborne threats.
The system's fire control capabilities have also been significantly improved. It now includes a fire control system (FCS) with day and night targeting optics, a laser rangefinder, and artificial intelligence-powered target recognition. The AI elements enable automatic detection and tracking of UAVs, improving response time and accuracy. Additionally, a compact EchoGuard radar has been integrated to bolster detection capabilities.
The modernization of the KDV system highlights Germany’s ongoing commitment to supporting Ukraine with advanced military technology. The upgraded system is expected to enhance Ukraine’s ability to defend critical infrastructure and frontline positions from drone threats.
The increasing use of drones in modern conflicts has driven the demand for advanced counter-UAV solutions. Systems like the KDV play a crucial role in defending military units and key infrastructure from reconnaissance and attack drones, which have become a defining feature of contemporary warfare.
