Greece seeks prominent role in European Commission under von der Leyen
Greece is actively pursuing a significant position in the newly configured European Commission, with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressing hope that Ursula von der Leyen will recognize the country's strategic importance when she forms her team.
Mitsotakis has articulated his desire for a portfolio that highlights Greece's economic advancements and its pivotal role on the southeastern flank of Europe and NATO, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
He emphasized that Greece's position in the Commission should reflect both its progress and strategic significance.
This appeal comes in the wake of von der Leyen’s re-election for a second term as President of the European Commission, a victory bolstered by support from the European Parliament. The Greek Prime Minister’s push for a key role for Greece is underscored by his influential support during von der Leyen’s re-election campaign.
Interestingly, Mitsotakis himself was considered a potential candidate for the Commission presidency if von der Leyen had failed to secure enough backing. As a result, the Prime Minister's current advocacy for Greece's prominent role in the European Commission is viewed as both a strategic move and a reflection of his significant influence in European politics.
