Greenpeace activists protest atop 50-meter tower in Poland
On the morning of April 9, Greenpeace activists staged a protest at the Szczyglowice mine in Poland’s Silesian Voivodeship.
Eight activists entered the Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa-owned site and climbed a tower shortly after 5:00 a.m. local time (08:00 Baku time).
A banner reading “Dangerous methane emitted from here” was displayed atop the more than 50-meter-high shaft tower, according to Polish media.
Police are on-site, attempting to persuade the activists to come down. Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa described the protest as illegal and said it posed a threat to the health and safety of mine staff.
Greenpeace emphasised that the demonstration aims to draw attention to methane emissions from Polish coal mines, which have released approximately 360,000 tons of the hazardous gas so far in 2024.
