Head-on train collision in Slovakia injures 20 passengers
Two passenger trains collided head-on in Slovakia, leaving around 20 people injured with varying degrees of severity, according to Slovak media.
The incident occurred near the city of Rožňava, where two express trains travelling in opposite directions crashed while carrying a large number of passengers.
“About 20 people were injured,” the police said. “Law enforcement officers are securing the site, coordinating rescue operations, and managing the movement of people in the immediate vicinity.”
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has taken personal control of the situation. He said that several members of his government were already en route to the crash site and stressed the importance of a comprehensive investigation. “I am against any premature conclusions. The causes of this tragedy must be determined through a thorough investigation,” he wrote on his Facebook page.
Fico also expressed his wishes for the swift recovery of those injured and confirmed that he is maintaining constant contact with the ministers of transport and interior to monitor the response efforts.
According to preliminary estimates, about 80 people were aboard the trains at the time of the collision. No fatalities have been reported so far.
Rescue teams and law enforcement agencies are currently working at the scene to manage the aftermath of the accident and assist the injured passengers.
