Hungarian FM blasts EU peers over Ukraine: World wants peace, but Europe pushes war

17 April 2025 19:21

Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations Péter Szijjártó sharply criticised certain politicians within the European Union for obstructing peace efforts regarding the war in Ukraine, describing their actions as “shocking and unacceptable.”

Speaking at a joint press conference in Islamabad with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Szijjártó did not hold back in expressing concern over developments in Europe, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

“It is shocking that some European politicians are trying to undermine the success of peace talks on Ukraine and have opted to continue the war,” he stated.

“It is astounding that the entire world — including America, Asia, and Africa — is calling for peace in Europe, while at the same time, European politicians are taking actions against it. This is unacceptable, and that is why we are calling on European politicians not to sabotage the peace efforts of US President Donald Trump,” Szijjártó added.

The Hungarian Foreign Minister was in Islamabad to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Hungary and Pakistan. During the visit, the two sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in economic, cultural, and diplomatic spheres.

To that end, Hungary and Pakistan agreed on mutual visa exemption for holders of diplomatic passports. In addition, two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) were signed to deepen collaboration in the fields of culture and archaeology.

Both countries also pledged to expand cooperation in various sectors and to enhance their engagement on multilateral platforms, including the United Nations.

Szijjártó, who was accompanied by a sizable delegation of Hungarian business representatives, expressed satisfaction with recent developments in bilateral trade. “I am pleased to see that trade between our two countries has doubled,” he noted, highlighting Hungary’s contribution to food security and water management projects in Pakistan through its private sector initiatives.
