Hungarian FM warns Middle East war may drag on
Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said the ongoing war in the Middle East could last for a prolonged period, warning that the conflict poses serious risks to global energy security.
In a post published on Facebook, Szijjártó said he reached this assessment after a phone conversation with Gideon Sa’ar, the foreign minister of Israel.
“Today I discussed the situation in the Middle East by phone with Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, and we must prepare for the fact that this conflict will last quite a long time,” Szijjártó wrote.
He added that the war is creating challenges not only for international security but also for global energy supply.
“The war in the Middle East not only challenges international security, but also seriously threatens the security of the global energy supply. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has put the functioning of the global oil market in a dangerous position,” Szijjártó said.
