Hungarian PM proposes Russia-EU peace summit following Putin-Trump talks
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has proposed organising a summit between Russia and key European Union countries, including France and Germany, following a planned meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump.
Speaking on the radio, Orban described news of the forthcoming Putin-Trump talks as “good news”, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
He emphasised that a ceasefire could only be achieved if the American and Russian presidents reach an agreement.
Orban criticised the EU leadership for withdrawing from efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, accusing Brussels of supporting the continuation of hostilities.
He expressed disappointment in EU leaders, saying they had shown little effectiveness, citing recent negotiations with Washington over import tariffs as an example.
Instead, Orban suggested that it should be Germany’s Chancellor and France’s President who take the lead in talks with Moscow, either through a direct visit or on neutral ground. He argued that a Russia-EU summit was essential, given that the war is taking place on European soil.
“European countries must take the initiative to organise a high-level meeting with Russia,” Orban said, noting that he has raised this issue repeatedly during consultations with fellow European leaders in Brussels.
The Hungarian Prime Minister’s remarks come amid heightened tensions in Europe and growing calls for diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine.
