Hungary's PM warns of escalation in Ukraine: "Most dangerous two months of war"

20 November 2024 19:09

The likelihood of an escalation in the conflict in Ukraine could increase significantly over the next two months, as long as US President Joe Biden, who supports the continuation of hostilities, remains in power said Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Thus, Orbán issued this warning following a meeting of the country's Defence Council, convened to address the worsening situation in the Ukrainian conflict zone, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

The prime minister described the coming period as potentially "the most dangerous two months of the war" in Ukraine. "Yesterday, the Ukrainians launched long-range missiles at Russian territory, and Russia has amended its nuclear doctrine," Orbán noted.

He revealed that he had received a report from the Defence Council on these developments, which he described as deeply concerning. "The threat of an escalation in military actions in Ukraine has never been so great," Orbán stated.

He stressed that the Hungarian government's priority is to avoid any involvement in the Ukrainian conflict. "Hungary’s knowledge and diplomatic experience will be crucial to ensuring we continue to remain on the sidelines of this war," the prime minister added.

Orbán also expressed his hopes for a resolution to the conflict, placing them on former US President Donald Trump. "President Trump’s victory [in the elections] brings us closer to peace, or at least to a ceasefire," Orbán said.

Furthermore, the Hungarian Prime Minister initiated the Defence Council meeting in light of the escalating situation in Ukraine and the United States' decision to enable the use of long-range precision weapons against Russian territory.

According to Orbán’s spokesman, Bertalan Havasi, the session, which included the defence minister, the chief of the General Staff, and the prime minister's national security advisor, focused on the Ukrainian conflict.

This discussion followed Washington's authorisation "to use Western weapons against deep Russian territories". He also noted that the meeting reviewed updates to Russia's nuclear doctrine.
