India's Kolkata in turmoil as protests erupt over brutal killing of medical intern

Anger and grief turned into chaos in Kolkata as people took to the streets demanding justice for the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old intern doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College.

The protests escalated when demonstrators ransacked parts of the hospital, leading to clashes with the police, who responded with tear gas and water cannons, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

The unrest began on the night of August 14 to 15 when a large crowd gathered on the R.G. Kar campus, where the young doctor's mutilated body had been discovered in a seminar hall on August 9. Chanting slogans calling for swift justice and greater safety for young doctors, the protesters' frustration boiled over as they stormed the hospital's emergency ward, damaging property and disrupting services.

According to NDTV, the situation rapidly deteriorated as some protesters hurled stones at the hospital building, striking several police officers stationed nearby. At least two police vehicles were damaged in the melee, and demonstrators tore down barricades that had been erected around the hospital.

The police, struggling to control the growing crowd, resorted to firing tear gas and deploying water cannons to disperse the demonstrators. The violent protests highlight the deep-seated anger and fear within the medical community and the general public over the safety of healthcare professionals in India.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many demanding that authorities take immediate action to ensure justice for the victim and implement stronger security measures for young doctors across the country.
