India to launch first domestic semiconductor chip in 2025, says minister
India is set to become a major player in the global semiconductor industry with the release of its first domestically produced semiconductor chip this year, Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on July 18.
Speaking at the 85th foundation day celebrations of Keshav Memorial Educational Society in Hyderabad, Minister Vaishnaw highlighted the country’s growing capabilities in semiconductor design and manufacturing. “Today, some of the most complex chips are designed in cities such as Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pune, Gurugram, and Chennai,” he said, Caliber.Az reports via Indian media.
The minister revealed that six semiconductor manufacturing plants have already been approved and construction is underway. “We will have the first Made in India chip in 2025,” he affirmed.
In addition, as part of the India AI Mission, free datasets and other resources are being made available to the public, and one million people are currently being trained in artificial intelligence technologies.
Looking ahead, Vaishnaw expressed confidence in India’s economic future, predicting that the country will be among the top two economies in the world by 2047.
Reflecting on global economic shifts, the minister noted that the traditional dominance of Western economies is giving way to the rise of the “eastern hemisphere,” signalling a major transformation in the world order.
