Indonesia’s mount Semeru erupts six times in 24 hours
Indonesia’s Mount Semeru volcano erupted six times over the past 24 hours, sending massive ash plumes several kilometres into the sky, according to the country’s volcanic monitoring authorities.
Mount Semeru, located in the Lumajang area of East Java province, produced its first eruption with an ash column rising approximately 4.6 kilometres above sea level. Authorities said the dense ash plume drifted toward the northwest, MAGMA Indonesia, which monitors volcanic and geological activity across the country, reports.
Subsequent eruptions sent volcanic ash to heights of around 4.2 kilometres and 4.7 kilometres above sea level, according to monitoring data.
Indonesia, which sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is home to more than 120 active volcanoes and frequently experiences volcanic and seismic activity.
