Iran-Azerbaijan relations based on strong historical, cultural ties, says Iranian diplomat
Seyed Jafar Aghaei Maryan, Charge d'Affaires of the Iranian Embassy in Azerbaijan, underscored the comprehensive and multifaceted nature of relations between Iran and Azerbaijan, emphasizing that the foundation of these ties is both strong and enduring.
Aghaei Maryan stated that the Iran-Azerbaijan relationship is built on deep historical, cultural, religious, and kinship ties, which have withstood various challenges and political changes over time, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
According to the diplomat, these long-standing ties are so robust that they are not easily disrupted by external factors or attempts to sow discord. "The relations between Iran and Azerbaijan are so deep and broad that any problems or contradictions can be resolved amicably. Those who seek to create division between our countries are gravely mistaken," he asserted.
Aghaei Maryan highlighted the strategic partnership between the two nations in the field of infrastructure development, particularly in the context of the North-South Transport Corridor. Both countries are actively engaged in projects aimed at strengthening transit and transport links. Notably, the new bridge over the Astarachay River, which was built as part of bilateral cooperation, has already begun partial operations.
"We are working together to finalize the infrastructure at the checkpoint, and soon this project will be fully operational," the diplomat added.
Furthermore, Aghaei Maryan pointed out the importance of the construction of a railroad terminal in Iran's Astara, funded by Azerbaijan. He also discussed another significant initiative — the Aghband-Kalala road and rail project linking Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan exclave. The construction of a highway bridge over the Araz River has already begun, with roadwork underway on both sides of the border.
The diplomat also underlined defence cooperation between Iran and Azerbaijan, noting that joint military exercises in the Caspian Sea and along the border regions are important steps in strengthening bilateral relations. He described these exercises as an essential part of the promising and effective cooperation between the two countries.
Regarding the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, Aghaei Maryan reaffirmed Iran's longstanding position. "Iran has always shown a sensitive approach to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan," he said.
He expressed optimism that the restoration of Azerbaijan's territorial integrity and the ongoing peace process with Armenia would create favorable conditions for even deeper economic and regional cooperation. "The establishment of lasting peace in the region will undoubtedly open new opportunities for multifaceted collaboration between Iran and Azerbaijan," he added.
In light of the ongoing 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Baku, Aghaei Maryan also hailed the success of the event. He noted that Iran had played a pivotal role in facilitating the delivery of essential equipment to Azerbaijan to ensure the event's smooth preparation. "Iran is proud to have contributed to the success of COP29," the diplomat concluded.
