Iran demands release of Venezuela’s Maduro
Iran’s Foreign Ministry has called for the release of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro following his detention by the United States, warning that a lack of international response could encourage further violations of international law.
Speaking at a weekly press conference on January 5, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said the issue concerns all United Nations member states that are committed to upholding international principles. He stated that Iran’s position is based on legal and sovereign principles rather than support for any individual leader, Caliber.Az reports via Iranian media.
Baqaei said the detention of a sitting head of state would constitute a violation of national sovereignty and international norms if confirmed, adding that such actions are neither lawful nor justifiable. He urged the United Nations Secretary-General to act in accordance with the UN Charter and said silence on the issue could have broader consequences for the international community.
According to Iranian officials, several countries have already expressed positions on the situation. Baqaei warned that failing to respond clearly could set a precedent affecting global stability.
A reminder that Maduro was detained following US's military operations in Venezuela on January 3 and transported to a detention facility in New York, where he is expected to face trial on January 5. President Donald Trump said the United States intends to take control of Venezuela’s administration.
The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to meet on January 5 to discuss the situation.
