Iran's Supreme Court approves death sentence for Azerbaijani embassy attacker
The Supreme Court of Iran has upheld the death sentence for Yasin Hosseinzadeh, who was found guilty of carrying out a terrorist attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran, said Asghar Jahangiri, a spokesperson for the Iranian judiciary.
During a press conference, the spokesperson noted that the sentence had been sent to the Tehran court for execution, as reported by Caliber.Az, referencing Iranian media.
The execution will take place after the convicted individual’s parents meet with him.
Recall that on the morning of January 27, 2023, a gunman attacked the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran. The attacker breached the embassy’s security post and killed an Azerbaijani officer, the head of the security service, with an AK-47 (Kalashnikov) rifle. Two other embassy security officers were injured during the attack. Following the incident, the diplomatic mission ceased its operations in Tehran.
Iran said the attack stemmed from personal reasons, but Baku sees it as an act of terrorism.
The diplomatic mission resumed its activities in July of the previous year at a new address, a decision made after negotiations between the official authorities of Baku and Tehran.
