Iran said arrests senior officials after Hamas leader's assassination in Tehran
In response to a severe security breach that led to the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Iran has arrested over two dozen individuals, including senior intelligence officers, military officials, and staff workers at a military-run guesthouse in Tehran.
The high-level arrests follow the explosion that killed Haniyeh, who was visiting Tehran for the inauguration of Iran’s new president and staying at a heavily guarded compound, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
This breach has been described as a significant failure for Iran's leadership.
"The perception that Iran can neither protect its homeland nor its key allies could be fatal for the Iranian regime," said Ali Vaez, Iran director for the International Crisis Group.
The Revolution Guards Corps has taken over the investigation, with a focus on identifying and apprehending members of the assassination team.
The scope of the investigation has included sweeping raids, the confiscation of electronic devices, and intense scrutiny of surveillance footage and airport records.
The investigation underscores the gravity of the situation, with Iran’s leadership deeply rattled by the assassination, which occurred under heightened security on a day of national importance.
