Russian FM questions Trump’s “50-day” deadline for deal on Ukraine
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Moscow wants clarity on US President Donald Trump’s recent claim that a resolution to the war in Ukraine could be reached within 50 days.
“We, of course, want to understand what is behind this statement — 50 days. There were 24 hours before, then 100 days —we have been through all this, and we really want to understand what the President of the United States is driven by,” Lavrov told reporters following a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers, Caliber.Az reports per TASS.
Lavrov’s comments come in response to remarks made by Trump during a joint press appearance at the White House on July 14 with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The US president threatened to impose 100 per cent tariffs on Russia and on countries continuing to trade with Moscow if no ceasefire is achieved in Ukraine within 50 days.
The threat, Trump indicated, is part of a broader strategy to pressure the Kremlin as Russia’s war against Ukraine nears its third year.
