Iran threatens to mine Persian Gulf if US launches ground operation
Iran has issued a warning that it will mine all maritime routes in the Persian Gulf if the United States proceeds with a ground operation on Iranian territory or islands, as reported by the country's Defence Council, Fars News reports.
The Council stated, "Any attempt by the enemy to encroach on Iran's coasts or islands will result in the mining of all maritime routes and communication lines in the Persian Gulf and along the coast. This will include various types of naval mines, including floating mines, which can be deployed from the shore."
However, the Council clarified that countries not regarded as hostile to Iran would still be able to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, provided they coordinate with Tehran.
The warning comes after US President Donald Trump issued a 48-hour ultimatum for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, threatening to target energy infrastructure if the passage remains closed. Tehran swiftly rejected the ultimatum, reaffirming its willingness to strike US assets in the region.
