Iranian lawmaker proposes withdrawal from Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty
A lawmaker announced on March 28 that a fast-tracked bill proposing Iran’s exit from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a shift in the country’s nuclear policy has been submitted to parliament’s legislative body.
According to Malek Shariati, the proposal includes three key measures: withdrawal from the NPT, repeal of a law governing Iran’s commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal, and support for a new international agreement with aligned countries focused on developing peaceful nuclear technology, Iran International reports.
The announcement comes amid a parliamentary recess, with sessions yet to resume following recent joint Israeli and US airstrikes on Iranian territory.
Reports earlier indicated that Iran may consider withdrawing from the NPT, of which it has been a participant for many years.
