Iraq’s PM calls for regional–EU diplomatic alliance to end war
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani has called for the creation of a diplomatic alliance involving countries from the Middle East and the European Union to work toward ending the ongoing war in the region.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Media Office, Al-Sudani made the remarks on March 9 while participating in a conference on regional developments convened by the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission, with the participation of Arab and international leaders, Caliber.Az reports via Iraqi media.
During his address, Al-Sudani said the continuing conflict requires a unified international position and greater reliance on dialogue and cooperation to prevent further escalation that could threaten global peace and security.
He urged the formation of a diplomatic alliance including regional states and EU countries to push for an immediate end to the war and called for respect for national sovereignty and adherence to the United Nations Charter.
“We condemn the attacks that have occurred on Iraqi territory by all parties, and reaffirm our rejection of war and aggression in all its forms,” Al-Sudani said in his address, noting that “Iraq’s position remains firm in rejecting the use of its territory or airspace to carry out attacks or military operations against neighboring countries.”
He added: “We condemn the attacks against the Islamic Republic of Iran, its sovereignty, security, stability, and territorial integrity,” noting: “We reject violations of the sovereignty of brotherly Arab countries and reaffirm our solidarity with their measures to protect the integrity of their territory and their people.”
He continued: “We call for ending violations of state sovereignty, sparing civilians the scourge of conflicts, adopting the principle of good neighborliness, and adhering to the Charter of the United Nations. We also condemn the repeated attacks by the Israeli occupation on the territory of brotherly Lebanon and the violation of its sovereignty, as it constitutes a blatant breach of international law and conventions.”
He added: “We emphasize prioritizing dialogue and diplomatic means, and unifying Arab and Islamic ranks to contain the repercussions and safeguard Arab national security. We also We reaffirm the sanctity of diplomatic missions and strongly condemn the targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure, including oil and nuclear facilities.”
He pointed out that the continuation of such attacks would complicate efforts to reach a ceasefire and prolong the conflict, stressing that the United Nations General Assembly should adopt a resolution to stop the war while the Security Council must fulfill its responsibilities to maintain international peace and security.
