Iraqi, Qatari, and Syrian leaders discuss regional security in Doha
On April 18, 2025, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani made an "unexpected" visit to Qatar, where he held a trilateral meeting with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Doha.
The discussions primarily focused on the latest developments in the region and the ongoing situation in Syria, according to reports from Iraqi media, citing sources close to the government.
Sudani emphasised that Iraq is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Syria and voiced concerns over the military presence of Israel, labelling it as an "occupying force". He reiterated Iraq's firm stance on the importance of launching an inclusive political process in Syria, ensuring the protection of all religious, social, and national groups, and safeguarding holy sites.
Sudani stressed the significance of the meeting in the context of regional security dynamics, noting that the newly formed Syrian government must take immediate and decisive action against the terrorist organisation ISIS.
Additionally, Sudani confirmed that President al-Sharaa had been officially invited to the upcoming Arab League summit, which will be held in Baghdad on May 17, 2025. He expressed hope for al-Shara's attendance at the event.
Earlier, on April 16, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani had met with President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Doha, marking Sharaa’s first official visit to Qatar since taking power in Damascus following the fall of the former Syrian regime in December 2023. The two leaders discussed key regional and international issues, as well as ways to improve security and stability in the Middle East.
The meeting also touched on strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in the political and diplomatic fields. Both leaders expressed a desire to deepen cooperation between their nations. Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani were also present during the discussions.
