Ireland begins preparations to evict Ukrainian refugees from Cork hotel
Local authorities in the Irish city of Cork have begun preparations to relocate Ukrainian refugees who have been accommodated in a hotel since 2022.
According to the Irish Mirror, a significant number of Ukrainian refugees have been living at the Trabolgan Holiday Centre hotel in Midleton, a suburb of Cork, for the past several years.
The report says the Irish government has instructed residents to prepare for relocation “in the coming weeks,” marking a shift in the country’s long-term accommodation arrangements for displaced Ukrainians.
The situation has sparked political debate. Social Democrats MP Liam Quaide has spoken out in defence of the refugees, criticising the decision and calling for continued support for those affected by the conflict in Ukraine.
Following his remarks, Quaide said he received abusive messages on social media and was labelled a “traitor” by some users. Despite the backlash, he stated that he would continue advocating for refugees.
“This antagonism will not deter me from doing my job. In fact, it makes me more determined to support the residents,” Quaide said.
