Israel “appreciates” Ukraine’s antisemitism law update
Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar has welcomed Ukraine’s move to strengthen its legal framework against antisemitism, praising President Zelenskyy and Kyiv for adopting amendments to the country’s criminal code.
In a statement, Sa’ar said he “appreciates President Zelenskyy and Ukraine” for introducing criminal liability for manifestations of antisemitism."
"The amendment constitutes an important step in the fight against hate crimes, particularly antisemitism."
On April 14, Zelenskyy signed a new law aimed at strengthening penalties for anti-Semitic acts, in a move to reinforce protections against hate crimes in Ukraine.
Under the legislation, individuals found guilty of inciting hatred, promoting discrimination, restricting rights, or committing public acts motivated by antisemitism may face fines, restrictions on liberty, or imprisonment for up to three years.
The law envisions tougher penalties in cases involving aggravating circumstances. Offences that include violence, threats, deception, or are carried out by public officials can result in prison sentences of up to five years.
