Israeli bombardment in southern Lebanon kills journalist
A Lebanese journalist was killed and another seriously injured in an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon on April 22.
While performing her reporting duties, Amal Khalil, who worked for the Lebanese newspaper Al Akhbar, was killed. She is said to be the fourth media worker killed by Israeli strikes in Lebanon since March, according to the Lebanese National News Agency (NNA).
Lebanon’s state media and Health Ministry also announced that journalist Zeinab Faraj was injured while rescue teams attempted to reach Khalil, who was trapped under rubble. Authorities said Israeli strikes hit the city of Tyre, temporarily hindering evacuation efforts.
The Health Ministry stated that journalists had taken shelter in a nearby building following an initial strike, and that two additional people were killed in the bombardment.
Israel’s military confirmed that journalists were among those affected and said it was investigating the circumstances. It also stated that its forces had identified vehicles leaving what it described as a Hezbollah-linked military site and responded to perceived threats.
The incident occurred during a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, which had recently taken effect. The strikes have drawn international reactions, including concern from the United Nations and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
