ISW: Russian forces roll out Glaz/Groza system to streamline battlefield communication PHOTO

04 January 2025 10:28

The Russian Defence Ministry is advancing its military capabilities with the development of the Glaz/Groza system, a sophisticated software designed to streamline coordination between reconnaissance and strike units.

According to a report from the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), this cutting-edge technology is being actively promoted through Russian military training at the Mikhailovsky Military Artillery Academy in St. Petersburg, per Caliber.Az.

The Glaz/Groza system is showcased in a recent segment on Zvezda, a Russian state-controlled TV channel, where soldiers are seen learning to operate the software. The system is designed to enhance command and control for Russian units on the front lines, ensuring efficient and rapid communication across the battlefield.

ISW highlights that, prior to the introduction of Glaz/Groza, Russian forces largely relied on informal, ad-hoc communication methods, including social media messaging apps, to coordinate combat operations in Ukraine. This new system aims to standardize and expedite the coordination of reconnaissance and strike efforts, helping Russian forces respond more effectively during engagements.

The Glaz/Groza software functions as a digital map, providing geo-referenced locations of friendly units and enemy targets. This allows for seamless communication between reconnaissance drone operators and artillery units. Once a target is detected, operators can quickly relay critical information to command centres and artillery units, ensuring that targets are engaged swiftly and accurately.

A key feature of the Glaz/Groza system is its ballistic data library, which contains detailed information about artillery systems and munitions used by the Russian army. By inputting coordinates, altitude, and weather conditions, artillery gunners can lock onto targets and make precise adjustments within 2-4 minutes. This system is compatible with a variety of Russian weaponry, including howitzers, mortars, rocket artillery, infantry fighting vehicles, and tanks. Notably, the software allows tanks and infantry fighting vehicles to fire from concealed positions, enhancing their survivability and effectiveness.

The Glaz/Groza system is designed with user accessibility in mind. According to the Zvezda TV segment, the software can be easily operated on standard tablets, a feature that simplifies its integration into the troops. The user interface and software have been adapted for quick, on-the-ground use, ensuring soldiers can efficiently utilize the system during combat operations.

The Glaz/Groza system is expected to significantly reduce response times on the battlefield, cutting down the time from target detection to engagement to just minutes. This enhances the accuracy of initial strikes and fosters sustained cooperation between various military units. By streamlining communication and decision-making, Glaz/Groza represents a significant leap in Russia's military coordination and operational efficiency at the tactical level.
