Italy: Armoured vehicle robbed in daylight attack €2 million stolen
On December 1, a group of armed bandits carried out a “lightning-fast” robbery of an armoured vehicle in southern Italy, seizing valuables worth around €2 million.
The attack occurred near the town of Scilla on the Salerno-Reggio Calabria motorway, just outside a tunnel under the mountains, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
The robbery reportedly lasted only a few minutes, with the assailants making off with the cash carried by a vehicle operated by Sicurtransport.
Preliminary reports suggest that around ten people were involved. The gang arrived at the planned ambush site shortly after 6 a.m., blocked the motorway with burning cars, and scattered nails across the road.
During the heist, they used explosives and fired multiple rounds from Kalashnikov rifles and shotguns.
No fatalities were reported. Personnel accompanying the valuables were hospitalised following the incident.
A large section of the motorway remains closed as investigations continue. Authorities noted that this stretch of road has previously been the scene of high-profile robberies, including a notable attack in 1997.
