Italy may offer US military bases if Trump joins Israel’s operation against Iran
On June 19, Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported that Italy could provide the United States with military bases on its territory if US President Donald Trump decides to join Israel’s military operation against Iran.
The report comes amid escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran, which began on the night of June 13.
On that night, Israel launched a major military operation targeting Iran’s nuclear and military infrastructure. Less than 24 hours later, Iran retaliated with a large-scale missile and drone attack against Israel. In the following days, the two countries exchanged further strikes, resulting in casualties and damage on both sides. Both Israel and Iran acknowledged that multiple strategic targets were hit, and the cycle of mutual attacks is ongoing.
Citing sources within the Italian government, La Repubblica noted that no formal request has yet been received from US partners regarding the use of Italian bases. However, Rome is approaching the situation cautiously due to the presence of Italian troops in Iraq and Lebanon, regions that could face increased threats as Iran has warned it would target bases of countries supporting Israel.
The publication also emphasised that, although the final decision rests with Rome, the Italian government would be unlikely to refuse Washington’s request if made. The potential bases in question include NATO facilities located in Aviano, Vicenza, Naples, and Sigonella on the island of Sicily.
During a press briefing following the G7 summit in Canada, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni refrained from giving a direct answer about the possible use of Italian bases, stating, “We will assess the situation when the time comes. Such decisions are not made on the fly.”
La Repubblica further noted that Italian officials hope the US will primarily use regional bases in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Bahrain to conduct any operations related to the conflict.
