Japan’s PM Takaichi set for resounding election win — poll
Japan’s ruling coalition, led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and comprising the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the Japan Innovation Party, is on track to win a two-thirds supermajority in the lower house following Sunday’s elections, according to an exit poll conducted by Japanese public television NHK.
Based on surveys conducted at 4,000 polling stations nationwide, the coalition could secure more than 310 seats, giving it a constitutional majority that could pave the way for potential constitutional revisions, long advocated by the LDP and Prime Minister Takaichi.
The LDP alone is projected to win over 233 seats, potentially reaching up to 274 seats in its most favourable scenario.
Meanwhile, the main opposition party, the Constitutional Reform Centrist Union, is expected to win between 37 and 91 seats, down sharply from its previous 172 seats in the lower house.
