Japanese Kawasaki debuts hydrogen internal combustion engine motorcycle Pioneering green technology / VIDEO

27 July 2024 07:03

Japan’s Kawasaki Motors has unveiled a hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycle during the Suzuka 8 Hours FIM World Endurance race in Japan in a groundbreaking move towards sustainable transportation.

Kawasaki has made a groundbreaking debut in the motorcycle world by showcasing a hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine at the Suzuka 8 Hours FIM World Endurance race at Japan's Suzuka Circuit, Caliber.Az reports citing the foreign media.

This marks the first time a major motorcycle manufacturer has unveiled such a technology.

While electric motorcycles have become more common, offering substantial range for short journeys thanks to onboard batteries, hydrogen-powered bikes have remained largely unexplored. Kawasaki’s initiative represents a significant leap in this direction.

The company’s hydrogen engine is based on the 998cc supercharged inline-four from its high-performance Ninja H2 model. Significant modifications were made to enable direct hydrogen fuel injection into the cylinders. Additionally, the bike’s chassis was adapted to house hydrogen fuel canisters and the necessary supply system.

This innovative approach aims to merge the benefits of internal combustion with the clean energy potential of hydrogen, potentially setting a new standard in motorcycle performance and sustainability.

“Hydrogen ICE motorcycles harness the power of hydrogen combustion, providing riders with the familiar rumble and exhilarating throttle response they crave, all while emitting primarily water vapor and a minimal amount of CO2,” Kawasaki explained.

However, it’s worth noting that most hydrogen currently produced for fuel comes from natural gas reforming, a process that generates considerable CO2 emissions. Although there is potential for cleaner hydrogen production methods—such as electrolysis powered by solar energy—the majority of available hydrogen still involves significant environmental impact.

Despite this, Kawasaki’s approach remains a novel and intriguing development in the motorcycle industry.

“As part of its carbon-neutral initiative, Kawasaki Motors is dedicated to developing a hydrogen internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycle, targeting availability as a carbon-neutral option for riders starting in the early 2030s,” the company stated. “The timing and availability of these motorcycles will depend on the development of hydrogen fuel infrastructure and the regulatory landscape in each country.”

“Kawasaki Motors is committed to strengthening its brand by offering products and services that address the needs of both customers and society, including advancements toward carbon neutrality. We are exploring all possibilities to enhance the happiness and joy of everyone connected with the Kawasaki brand.”

With ongoing efforts, there’s hope that clean hydrogen could become economically viable, potentially leading to a future where hydro-powered bikes are a reality.
