JD Vance says Iran must take next step to resume nuclear talks with US
US Vice President JD Vance has stated that the decision to resume direct negotiations with the United States rests with Iran.
When asked what's coming next, he said in an interview with Fox News the question is better asked of the Iranians, because the ball is "in their court."
The vice president stressed that if America’s “red lines” on Iran’s nuclear ambitions are met, “then this can be a very, very good deal for both countries.”
He rejected reports that recent peace talks in Pakistan ended in failure.
“I wouldn't just say that things went wrong. I also think things went right. We made a lot of progress. They moved in our direction, which is why I think we would say that we had some good signs, but they didn't move far enough,” Vance added.
The US official noted that some progress had been made, but not enough to secure the removal of Iran’s enriched uranium and guarantees that Tehran would not obtain nuclear weapons.
He placed responsibility for returning to the negotiating table on Iran.
“There really is, I think, a grand deal to be had here, but it’s up to the Iranians, I think, to take the next step,” he emphasised.
