Kazakhstan open to hosting Iranian uranium storage – Foreign Ministry
Kazakhstan has expressed readiness to assist in the issue of Iranian uranium, while stressing that any final decision will depend on international agreements, according to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yerlan Zhetybayev.
Zhetybayev said the country is closely monitoring developments surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme and supports the use of nuclear energy exclusively for peaceful purposes under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Caliber.Az reports via Kazakh media.
He noted that Kazakhstan, along with other countries, has expressed willingness to help address the issue, but only with the consent of all negotiating parties.
“A number of countries, including Kazakhstan, have expressed readiness in a spirit of goodwill to provide technical assistance in resolving this issue, provided that appropriate international agreements are reached between all involved parties and the matter is moved into a practical phase,” Zhetybayev said.
He also pointed out that Kazakhstan hosts the IAEA Low Enriched Uranium Bank, which belongs to the agency and serves as a reserve source of nuclear fuel for peaceful nuclear energy programmes.
“We have expressed commitment and readiness in a spirit of goodwill to provide technical assistance. Again, I repeat, provided that appropriate agreements are reached,” the Foreign Ministry spokesperson added.
