Kyrgyzstan prevents attempted power seizure, mass riots

12 November 2024 20:46

Kyrgyzstan's Ministry of Internal Affairs has foiled an attempt to destabilize the country and seize power by a group planning to incite violence ahead of the local council elections scheduled for November 17, 2024.

The Ministry reported the detention of individuals suspected of planning mass riots, destabilize the country's socio-political situation, Caliber.Az reports.

The Interior Ministry's statement confirmed that a group had been preparing for widespread unrest with the intent to undermine the government. Authorities acted swiftly to prevent the situation from escalating, ensuring the security of the nation.

According to the ministry, the group had planned to organize sports events and other competitions in the suburbs of Bishkek. Under the guise of these national sports games, they intended to provoke acts of violence, make anti-constitutional calls, and create unrest to facilitate a violent seizure of power.

Based on the gathered evidence, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has initiated criminal proceedings under Kyrgyzstan's Criminal Code, specifically articles 36 to 278, part 1. These charges relate to the preparation of mass disorder, which could involve violence, looting, arson, destruction of property, the use of firearms or explosives, and armed resistance to authorities.

As part of the ongoing investigation, several individuals connected to the plot have already been detained. Authorities continue to work to ensure the safety and stability of the nation ahead of the upcoming elections.
