Latvia may soon launch mandatory female conscription
Latvian Minister of Defence Andris Sprūds has expressed support for the compulsory recruitment of women into the State Defense Service (VAD).
This proposal, initially suggested by Leonīds Kalniņš, Commander of the National Armed Forces (NBS), is set to undergo thorough discussions within the coalition, parliament, and broader society, Sprūds said August 4, Caliber.Az reports, citing Latvian media.
The VAD is projected to include approximately 1,000 young men next year, with an aim to reach 4,000 soldiers annually.
However, Kalniņš highlighted concerns about meeting this target due to the unfavourable demographic situation in Latvia. He emphasized the need for strategies to motivate public engagement in the defence service.
Kalniņš advocated for the compulsory conscription of both men and women, citing higher quality, efficiency, and discipline in units with female personnel, based on his experience in the Home Guard. "It would be a very good signal if such a decision was taken politically," he added.
While Kalniņš believes in the superiority of volunteer soldiers, he acknowledged the potential necessity of mandatory conscription for all young adults over 18, regardless of sex, to ensure adequate military personnel.
The law on the State Defense Service, passed by the Latvian Parliament on April 5, 2023, mandates that every Latvian male citizen must serve in the defence service within one year of turning 18 or, if still in education, within one year of graduating but no later than the age of 24. Additionally, Latvian citizens—both men and women between the ages of 18 and 27—may apply for the VAD on a voluntary basis.
