Latvia signs €81 million contract to acquire spike anti-tank missile systems
On June 3, 2025, Latvia’s Ministry of Defence signed a contract with the German firm EuroSpike for the procurement of Spike anti-tank missile systems, ammunition, and related equipment worth €81 million.
Latvian Defence Minister Andris Sprūds emphasised that the Spike system has proven its combat effectiveness and meets all operational requirements of the Latvian National Armed Forces (NAF), Caliber.Az reports via Latvian media.
Deliveries of the missile systems are set to begin in 2028.
The agreement also includes a provision for the involvement of Latvia’s domestic industry in fulfilling the order, up to 30% of the contract’s value. The Defence Ministry considers this local participation a key component of its defence innovation strategy, aiming to support and grow the national defence sector.
The Spike missile system, originally developed and manufactured in Israel, is regarded as one of the most advanced in the world in its category. It features both fourth- and fifth-generation missiles equipped with electro-optical guidance systems that allow for precise targeting and the capability to destroy a wide range of armoured vehicles, including main battle tanks.
A key advantage of the Spike system is its data link between the missile and the launcher, which enables operators to remain hidden and at a safe distance from enemy forces while retaining full control over the missile during flight.
This is not Latvia’s first Spike acquisition. In 2018, the Ministry of Defence also signed a procurement contract with EuroSpike for similar systems, reinforcing a longstanding relationship between the Latvian military and the manufacturer.
