Lebanese army distances itself from Hezbollah disarmament plans
The Lebanese army will not participate in efforts to disarm Hezbollah, a senior official from the group announced.
Mahmoud Qamati, deputy head of Hezbollah’s Political Council, said in an interview with Russian media that the Lebanese military is taking a pragmatic view of the government’s position on the issue and has no intention of intervening.
“Neither the state, nor the government, nor any force in Lebanon, nor any force in the world, nor any international force—no one will be able to disarm Hezbollah,” Qamati said. “This is something impossible. It cannot be achieved in any form, and the army will not participate in it.”
His remarks came in response to a question about whether the Lebanese army could become involved in any process aimed at disarming the group and what consequences such involvement might entail.
Qamati added that, in his view, the Lebanese army is demonstrating greater prudence than the government in handling the issue.
