Lego honours iconic Barcelona sight's reopening by releasing largest set yet
As Barcelona's iconic Sagrada Família enters the final phase of construction after nearly a century and a half, iconic toy manufacturer Lego is giving architecture enthusiasts the chance to recreate Antoni Gaudí's masterpiece brick by brick in the company's most ambitious offerings to date.
The worldwide beloved Danish toymaker has unveiled a highly detailed Sagrada Família model to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Gaudí's death, the company's press release states, expanding its lineup of famous architectural landmarks that already includes New York City's skyline, the Eiffel Tower and Rome's Trevi Fountain.
Comprising 12,060 pieces, the model stands 62 centimeters tall and faithfully recreates the intricate details of what will become the world's tallest church once completed. The premium collector's set will retail for $799.99.
Among its standout features is a stained-glass effect that recreates the vibrant colors cast by sunlight through the basilica's famous windows, one of the defining characteristics of Gaudí's design.
"Our goal was to honour Gaudí's vision with the utmost respect, capturing the rhythm of the basilica's construction, its extraordinary complexity and ambition, and translating that into an immersive building experience," Lego Design Master Rok Žgalin Kobe said in a statement released this week.
The real Sagrada Família, whose construction began in 1882, is now approaching completion after 144 years of work and is expected to be finished in the coming years, marking the culmination of one of the longest-running architectural projects in modern history.
The Lego set is already available for pre-order, with worldwide sales set to begin on November 1.
