Lightning strike in India claims 8 lives, including 6 children
Eight individuals, including six schoolchildren, tragically lost their lives, and one person was seriously injured when a lightning strike hit a shelter during heavy rainfall in the Rajnandgaon district of Chhattisgarh, India on September 23.
The group, all Class 11 students, were returning home after completing an examination, as confirmed by District Collector Sanjay Agrawal, Caliber.Az reports via Indian media.
The lightning struck the shed where they had taken refuge, resulting in the immediate deaths of eight people, including the six students. Superintendent of Police Mohit Garg stated that preliminary reports indicate that eight individuals, including several schoolchildren, were killed in the lightning strike.
“Additionally, one person has been injured and is receiving treatment in hospital,” he said.
In response to the tragedy, the state government swiftly announced an ex gratia payment of ₹4 lakh ($4,787) for the families of each victim. Following the incident, senior government officials and police personnel arrived at the scene to assess the situation and provide necessary assistance.
The unfortunate event has highlighted the importance of safety measures during thunderstorms. Authorities have cautioned residents in lightning-prone areas to avoid taking shelter under trees or sheds, urging them to remain indoors or in secure structures during severe weather conditions.
