Lufthansa drops free cabin suitcases in basic fares
Germany’s largest airline, Lufthansa, has introduced a revised fare structure that could increase travel costs for some passengers, particularly on short- and medium-haul routes.
The airline said the changes are driven by rising fuel prices and the impact of recent labour disputes, both of which have placed pressure on its operations, Der Spiegel reports.
Under the new system, the lowest-tier fare—Economy Basic—will no longer include the free carriage of a small cabin suitcase. Passengers will instead be permitted to bring only one personal item, such as a laptop bag or a small backpack, with maximum dimensions of 40×30×15 cm. Additional carry-on baggage and checked luggage will be available for an extra fee, starting at approximately €15.
The revised fares will be introduced on selected routes from April 28 and will apply to flights beginning May 19. The Lufthansa Group plans to extend the model across its wider network.
The airline said the changes reflect “evolving passenger behaviour” and are intended to provide more flexible pricing options, particularly for short, same-day travel.
