Macron, Bayrou become France’s most unpopular political duo Poll shows
French President Emmanuel Macron and newly appointed Prime Minister François Bayrou have emerged as the most unpopular leadership tandem in the country's modern political history, according to a recent IFOP/JDD survey published by Le Figaro.
Only 19% of respondents said they were satisfied with Macron’s performance—though this is still higher than François Hollande’s record low of 13%. Bayrou’s approval rating stands at 18%. Their combined approval amounts to just 37%.
Previously, Emmanuel Macron’s popularity had never fallen below 20%. Even during the height of the “Yellow Vest” protests, when the president became the main target of public anger, his support still held at 23%.
Following the resignation of Michel Barnier’s government after a vote of no confidence, Macron’s approval rating was at 21%, rising to 28% in April last year. This increase was attributed to Donald Trump’s sharp rhetoric on trade tariffs, international instability, and a temporary “rally around the flag” effect. However, that boost in public trust has since faded.
Even among those who voted for Macron in the 2022 presidential election, only 49% are currently satisfied with his performance.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister François Bayrou has become the most unpopular head of government in France’s modern history.
